Enterprise Messaging Systems (EMS) form the transactional backbone of many large organisations worldwide. They are highly reliable, flexible and scalable systems that allow asynchronous message exchange between two or more applications to achieve a business goal. The primary components of an EMS are the message brokers and the messaging clients. The EMS test environment used for this article leverages ActiveMQ message broker, and messaging clients written with Java Messaging Service (JMS) API. 1,2,3 Enterprise Messaging Systems (EMS) form the transactional backbone of many large organisations. But EMS systems can be compromised if security is overlooked during development. Gursev Singh Kalra of McAfee Foundstone Professional Services examines the chief vulnerabilities of these systems, and what threats these present.
