This article deals with the installation of Linux on the third generation or earlier iPod versions. A free software from the open-source iPod Linux Project supports all third generation and earlier iPods. The installation process is very straightforward. Plug the iPod in and make sure that it is mounted on the desktop, then run the installer. Once completed, eject the iPod through iTunes or by dragging its icons to the Trash. Disconnect it then reboot it. Upon seeing the Apple logo, press and hold the back button. In a few seconds, the new interface should appear. Probably the primary advantage of installing Linux on an iPod is record high quality audio. Using an Apple software, you can create recordings only up to 8kHz with your iPod. A Linux-enabled third-generation iPod circumvents this restriction, for it can record mono audio at up to 96kHz. The supported iPod can also display images in black and white. If you try to play music with your Linux iPod, you will quickly notice that the songs do not sound very good. If you try to play a song and then play Tetris while listening to it, the song stops. A simple soft reset is all it takes to switch back to the regular iPod OS. The iPod Linux Project is open source, which means new features are always in the pipeline and anyone with sufficient programming background can help.
