Treffer: Programming‐Enhanced Mechanics—An Innovative Teaching Approach for AI Engineering Education.

As engineering education adapts to the digital transformation, traditional methods of teaching mechanics are being rethought. A newly developed course design for Engineering Mechanics 1 integrates computational modeling and programming from the outset. Students use Python and symbolic computation tools to analyze mechanical systems, shifting the educational focus from manual calculation toward conceptual understanding and digital modeling competencies. This approach was implemented in the interdisciplinary bachelor's program „AI Engineering". Students develop programming skills alongside a deeper comprehension of mechanical principles by solving exercises using computer algebra systems rather than traditional hand calculations. A scaffolded structure supports learning progression: early assignments provide pre‐structured templates, which are gradually reduced to foster independent problem‐solving strategies. Graphical representations, such as internal force diagrams, are also used to enhance system‐level reasoning. In addition, electronic response systems (ERS) offer real‐time feedback and support continuous monitoring of conceptual understanding. Initial evaluations suggest that the integrated approach not only strengthens understanding of basics in mechanics but also promotes essential digital competencies for modern engineering practice.
