This article focuses on mobile extensible markup language (XML) and Web services. Great tools do not do much good if they ate so big that they cannot be carried anywhere. That is the problem with XML and Web services--at least for those expected to deliver their applications to a mobile workforce. However, developments are changing this situation. Within the campus environment where their is high bandwidth wireless local area network connections, it is easy to extend XML and Web services to mobile devices running Microsoft Pocket PC or CE operating systems. There are several industrial product lines to choose from vendors, including Intermec, LXE, Psion and Symbol Technologies. Moving beyond the corporate campus, choices diminish rapidly. Intermec makes its 700 Series of color computers that run Windows Mobile 2003 and connect via cellular phone networks, but if this service is to be delivered to a mass audience, interface changes are needed. This can be done by writing a small piece of server coded that interfaces with standard XML documents or Web services and client application. Another advancement that will make it easier to work with XML documents and consume Web services on mobile devices is the development of a standard Application Programmer Interface for Web services on mobile Java devices.
