In this article, the authors present experiments assessing the performance of different Java Development Kits (JDKs) with respect to agent-based models. They measure the execution time of two prototypical agent-based models written in Java computer language under different JDKs and operating systems. Agent-based models can serve as an important tool for the social scientist. A lot of those models are developed in Java, not least because of the system-independence of the programming language and the availability of advanced modeling toolkits for Java. During the installation of the authors' new cluster computing system for agent-based models the question was raised which JDK and Java Virtual Machines to choose. In order to get a satisfying answer, they performed a systematic evaluation of currently available JDKs with respect to agent-based simulation models. This article presents a summary of their method and results. Two well-known agent-based models implemented in Java by the authors were used for the performance evaluation.
