Summary: For comparing a set of observed relative frequencies with a hypothetical underlying probability vector a notion of discrepancy function is defined by introducing some reasonable properties. It is shown that there is essentially one discrepancy function in this sense (up to a constant factor), which in the case of a complete partition of the same space coincides with the usual \(\chi^ 2\)-statistic.
