This presentation was delivered by Niklas Zimmer at the Awareness Workshop on Digitisation for the Preservation of Documentary Heritage in Africa , held on 5 June 2025 at Hotel Africana in Kampala, Uganda . Organised in collaboration with UNESCO, Makerere University (EASLIS), and the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO (UNATCOM), the workshop aimed to sensitise key stakeholders about sustainable and scalable strategies for digitisation in the African GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector. The talk introduces: The end-to-end digitisation workflows employed by FCTEC across Africa, Case studies demonstrating the integration of Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) , AI-driven solutions for metadata creation, classification, and access, Practical steps for capacity-building in national and institutional digital preservation strategies. The presentation also outlines how African heritage institutions can future-proof their collections through responsible and context-aware digital transformation.
