This position paper presents GILD – an integrated learning and development environment for programming. The objective of the GILD project is to provide facilities for teaching and learning Java that are tightly integrated with a fully featured, mature and widely adopted development environment. GILD is being designed as a plug-in for Eclipse and takes full advantage of the Eclipse Java development tools. It will also include collaborative support as well as more sophisticated methods for teaching and learning the first principles of a programming language. In this paper we identify the technical and pedagogical aspects that we think will contribute to its adoption by both teachers and students, while discussing the challenges and barriers that we may face. 1.
