Choosing the right programming language is extremely important when it comes to studying, but this choice is even more difficult in the context of business or academic environment. Training and development of business applications and academic programs are time-consuming processes, and given the pace of development of modern software and hardware technologies, hasty or inappropriate choices could result in the loss of effort, time and money. The emergence of new programming languages is not uncommon, it is rather an expression of man's eternal quest for perfection, even when communicating with a computer. Therefore, the following questions arise – what are the leading reasons for one programming language to be widely used and successful, and meanwhile what causes another to lose popularity and be forgotten. Which programming language is a good start for newcomers and which one would present software development to them as extremely complex. Whether and to what extent the programming language is important for the business and which would be appropriate – a language which would allow an application to be developed as soon as possible or one which would facilitate the maintenance process. The subject of the dissertation research is a comparison of programming languages according to the different criteria for the choice of a programming language for developing applications in a business context and for training in academic environments.
