This presentation was delivered at the TUT LIS Transformative Summit on 29 August 2025 at the Pretoria Campus of Tshwane University of Technology. Representing First Coast Technologies (FCTEC), Unathi Zibulwana explored the strategic role of artificial intelligence in reimagining academic library workflows. The talk charts the evolution from traditional digitisation toward intelligent automation, showcasing how AI—through Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) and Metadata-as-a-Service (MaaS)—can enhance access, accelerate metadata creation, and unlock value across academic and heritage repositories. Real-world applications such as automated metadata for ETDs, redaction workflows, and AI-driven transcription were highlighted, alongside a scalable digitisation pipeline used in several African institutions.
