As part of the new standards on automotive fuel consumption and pollution, SIMBA project brings together several automotive air loop supplier around a common goal : to develop a simulation tool of the automotive air loop which takes into account the interactions between components, and will enable to improve performance of the whole system. In this project, FEMTO-ST institute was in charge to perform flow measurements (temperature, pressure, velo- city, gas concentration and particle size) in the air loop. The aim is to provide a database giving the boundary conditions to use in the numerical tool, and also to make comparisons between numerical results and experi- mental ones. This thesis focuses on PIV velocities measurements in the air loop under real conditions on an industrial engine test bench. The first part presents a versatile solution for PIV measurements which is suitable to carry out measurements in the ducts of the intake, the EGR and the exhaust. For the intake manifold, a specific solution was developed to characterize simultaneously its eight runners. It required the development of complex optical devices which allowed to generate laser sheets into the runners, and to visualize particles fields by the mean of two cameras. The second part concerns data and image processing. Python coded PIV software that deals with experiments specific constraints is presented. It was tested and validated to justify its use in the experimental conditions of the study. The last section presents results obtained during this study. Results are also associated with those from other experimental measurements (pressure and temperature), as well as with results from numerical simulations.
