The Web3D Consortium and the ISO MPEG4 working group have devoted an important effort towards the coding and transmission of animated 3D scenes over various networks and these efforts are still in progress. Both VRML and MPEG4 have adopted the same scene graph structure for scene modelling. However, pure parametric scene description is inadequate for many applications and both standards include programming facilities for content authoring. This paper describes the different programming APIs proposed by VRML and MPEG4. As all these API's are essentially Java-based, we also give an overview of the Java3D programming environment. Then we briefly describe the future directions of ongoing 3D standardisation activities.
