Les moyens de surveillance du trafic aérien français ont évolué depuis le premier radar primaire installé il y a juste 50 ans à Orly, jusqu'au premier radar secondaire en 1962, et enfin jusqu'au radar secondaire «mode S» installé l'an dernier à Charles-de-Gaulle. Ce nouveau type de radar permet à la fois de localiser l'avion et d'échanger des données entre sol et bord. Le contrôle des mobiles roulant sur les aéroports exige toujours des radars primaires. L'évolution va vers des techniques de plus en plus informatisées qui comprendront des échanges de données de position entre avions pour un nouveau partage des responsabilités entre avions et centres de contrôle.
