In this paper, we present a frame synchronization mechanism for the interactive surrounding display environment that is constituted by multiple rendering hosts. The purpose of this surrounding display environment is to create an immersive virtual environment, like CAVE [Proceedings of the SIGGRAPH 1993 (1993) 135], built by the PC cluster. This paper first models the synchronization of the rendering tasks among hosts as the convey effect and the marching effect. A synchronization mechanism, called the controller, is then discussed along with the frame synchronization algorithm. Furthermore, we implemented the frame synchronization algorithm in both hardware and software approaches to investigate the necessity of a special hardware for the multiple host parallel rendering environment. Our experiments showed that the hardware approach can achieve more accurate frame synchronizing effect but the software approach provides better flexibility in building such a system.
