The University's award-winning Hatfield Campus Learning Resources Centre, which opened in 1997, was an integral part of an ambitious learning resources strategy designed to meet student learning needs and expectations in the 21st century. This presentation looks at how the pioneering design of the building and its facilities and services supported the realization of the key strategic concepts. These included the delivery of integrated learning services, availability 24 hours a day 7 days a week, the exploitation of IT (Information Technology) on a large scale, environments to cater for a wide variety of study preferences and the encouragement of a self-help culture to support student independence. The resulting impact on the University, its staff and students and the stimulation of innovation in teaching and learning are also considered.
