Les AA. présentent le schéma mince d'UNIMARC XML, développé par le Centre pour les Technologies Informatiques de l'Université d'Etat de l'Oural en collaboration avec le Service National sur le développement du format RUSMARC. Ils rappellent dans un premier temps les caractéristiques du langage XML (eXtensible Markup Language) et son rôle de norme d'échange de données sur le Web. Le schéma mince XML, ou schéma de transport, définit les formats MARC au niveau le plus commun et sert de base pour les schémas normatifs. Il a été révisé pour prendre en compte toutes les caractéristiques d'UNIMARC.
