Further Information

This report describes a recent project at Sheffield (with British Library support) to investigate the use of genetic algorithms in some aspects of information retrieval. Genetic algorithms constitute an approach to solving certain kinds of problems (specifically combinatorial optimisation problems) in a nondeterministic fashion. The report is interesting and well-written, to Sheffield's usual high standards. This review offers an informal summary of the work, with some commentary. Part of the work has already been reported in the Journal of Documentation [1].
