This paper describes a lexical database developed in the Sift project (LRE 62030) for text retrieval tasks. With this database it is possible to extract distributed representations of the meaning of words from (semi-) automatically analyzed Machine Readable Dictionaries (MRDs). Distributed representations consist of semantic features with weights. Representations only differ in weighting so that they can be represented in an n-dimensional space and can be compared using staightforward matching algorithms (Sutcliffe 1991). In Sutcliffe (1992) weighting of features was based on traversal of taxonomic relations extracted from MRDs where features of more general concepts (e.g file) apply to more specific concepts (e.g text file) but by decreasing the weight of the general features.
