The project CRISTAL aims to provide access to textual information in three languages by matching concepts extracted form query and text rather using keywords. This paper compares the organisation of concepts in the electronic thesauri, including the Dicologique thesaurus used in CRISTAL, and considers their merits as components of a conceptually based information retrieval system. We conclude that the architecture of the conceptual links is of more importance than the theories which classify different links in different ways, and that an ontology taken over from standard printed thesauri is better adapted to applications like CRISTAL that one based on the mental lexicon.
