As natural language text processing becomes a more mature field, many of the most important in developing systms that prove themselves in real applications are matters of scale. This is particularly true in the areas of information retrieval and information extraction from text, where a program must be able to handle significant volumes of text, identity content that could potentially hold information of value and extract information, for example, to put in a database. This sort of information extraction and retrieval has been the subject of a number of significant projects and the centerpiece of thez U.S. governments's MUN and TIPSTER programs.
