In this review paper, the author tells us that information retrieval techniques reflect a growing effort to implement concept-based retrieval in the automatable regime of content- based algorithms. He traces the appearance of this effort in indexing retrieval, and interface design and considers brielfly the changes in evaluation of IR systems that will be needed to cope with very large dataspaces . He notes that IR has expanded from librarianship into fields such as office automation and multimedia management and that with the current effort toward the development of digital libraries IR has become the key issue of modern librarianship, challenging research in areas as diverse as artificial intelligence, natural-language processing, and the statistical theory of inference.
