This paper discussed a logic- based approach to thesaurus modelling. Thesauri are seen as semantic ressources for so-called semantic information retrieval systems which use conceptual descriptions in the matching component of a retrieval system. The relational model underlying traditional thesauri is discussed. The logic-based approach extends this model to a thesaural semantic network based on a relation type hierarchy, that supports inferential mechanisms both in definition and retrieval of thesaurus items . The logic-based approach is implmeented in IBM's product Thesaurus Administrator/2, whose editing and display capabilities are explained.
