Confronting users with a highly search functionality is one of the biggest deficits of almosts any of today's imaging systems. In most cases, these mechanisms are reduced to Boolean retrieval based on manually ascribed index terms and/or pure ASCII conversions that are done by means of OCR software. Associative and intuititve searches on the other hand are not supported by these system up to now. As a solution we propose a system that provide for a hypertext-like way of navigation within documents facsimiles. Because a manual hypertext conversion of documents does not make sense, as imaging systems generally aim at a reduction of manual effort, this conversion should be done automatically. In this paper we will describe a system that is able to convert a software manual into the desired format, making use of the wealth of layout information, and how the results of this conversion are presented to the user.
