This paper presents one approach to providing a user interface system for multimedia an information retrieval. The system presented incorporates results from DBMS and IR research. Conceptual models of heterogeneous information spaces are used to provide users with overview and understanding of the available information. The conceptual models are also used as active parts of query formulation providing the users with a means to express their needs. The system allows a mixture of exact DBMS queries and free entering of search terms to handle general and vague interests; The system handles multiple representations of the information space . A working prototype is describes with examples of how a user interacts with the system.
