In the recent years, a growing interest has been dedicated to the integration of search functions (typical of the Information Retrieval Field) with navigations functions (typical of hypertext systems). In the fields of legal databases the need for sophisticated models is emphasised by the requirements to combine in an effective way different types of texts in order to solve legal problems. Starting from the consideration of the benefits and limitations (under both a functional and economical viewpoint) of the existing models, we have defined a reference model which takes into account context information in order to improve the retrieval accuracy. The model is based on the close integration of the search and navigation dimensions. The model has been experimented on a significant excerpts of the Italian Banking Regulations, resulting in the NAVILEX prototype, based on a legal electronic book metaphor.
