In designing the new version of the integrated expert system ELP (environmental Legal Protection) Advisor created by a research group within the Istituto per la Documentazione Giuridica of the National Research Council, in Florence- a methodology was developed that seemed particularly suitable for the type of problems the system had to deal with. Some of the techniques used for implementing the system are described in this paper, with reference to the characteristics of the chosen legal domain and the potential of the tools utilized; however, emphasis is on the system configuration proposal in relation to expert system-database integration and the features of the linguistic-semantic interface implemented in order to make the interactive use of the individual components possible within the overal system.
