The object of the research is to extend the pattern-matching algorithms used on very fast hardware to accept the weighting schemes necessary for effective ranked retrieval. For TREC-2 two classes of retrieval algorithms that can be executed by the FDF were experimented. The first involved using proximity measures to rank hit documents. The second was an adaptation of the conventionnal Information Retrieval (IR) technque of retrieving and ranking documents based on the accumulktated score of a series of statistically weighted terms.
