Situated at the borders of three important tectonic plates, Iran has the highest seismic risk in the region. Throughout history, Iran has frequently suffered large and devastating earthquakes that have caused heavy casualties and widespread economic losses. The latest catastrophic earthquake in northern Iran in 1988 has made owners of buildings and government officials aware of the potential risks of seismically hazardous buildings and the need for upgrading. An upgrade design used for an eight-storey RC building in Tehran is presented. The building was originally designed and constructed as a five-storey structure without seismic protection. Furthermore the owners had decided to add three more storeys and then seismically upgrade the whole structure. This paper concentrates on the upgrading of the building for both vertical and lateral loads, providing information on strengthening procedures.
