During the past 10 years the storage and retrieval of textual information has penetrated the field of database management systems. These days we witness a similar― although much faster― surge of graphics and images in various kinds of databases systems. Of the many existing software packages for information storage and retrieval, a fast growing number offer the possibility of storing images. For one thing this fits in with the present multimedia hype. For another thing, document image systems have their origin in the field of administrative automation. Not just retrieval ASCII texts of documents, but also corresponding images can be stored ; or conversely, not just images but also underlying ASCII texts can be stored and made searchabble in text-retrieval systems. As part of a software evaluation project, criteria for the evaluation of image capabilities of retrieval software packages are listed. These criteria are used to report on the graphical capabilities of the following software packages : Advision, askSam, Cardbox for Windows, FolioViews, IdeaList, Inmagic-Image, KAware, Personal Librarian and ZyImage.
