This paper describes the results of a research project in the area of electronic books and libraries. Our approach to electronic books design is to make them as similar as possible to ordinary books, exploiting a cognitive model familiar to a wide variety of users who will need to access distributed information servers. After a brief discussion of two new forms of electronic books (Hyperbook and Visualbook) conceived as entities within a Virtual Electronic Library (VEL), we present a particular type of Hyperbook (Dynamic WAIS Book) as a flexible environment within to search and locally organise information distributed across a wide area network. Hyperbooks and Visualbooks are based on the same philosophy but offer specifially different features related to the type of documents from which they originate : electronic texts and paper texts respectively. Dynamic WAIS Book is particular Hyperbook. Like its model it provides a powerful publishing environment for electronic books, the difference being in the acquisition process of electronic texts : instead of local text files, they are documents retrieved on Internet using the WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers) protocol.
