The different concepts used to create database management systems, the incompatibility of hardware and the absence of a unified approach to the creation of databases combine to prevent the creation and use of combined databanks. This paper reviews the most popular database management systems used in the USSR and attempts a comparative analysis. The success of any new project is determined to a great degree by the level of specialist knowledge available on the latest achievement in science and technologie. This is why one of the most important tasks in the field of applied informatics is the creation of automated information systems (AISs), which are designed to allow access by users who are not computer specialists.
