A thesaurus in an information retrieval system (IRS) may be seen as a kind of knowledge base (KB) that represents a conceptual model of some subject domain. Indeed, the function of a thesaurus in an IRS has much in common with that of a KB in an expert system (ES). Between thesaurus based IRS's and classification ES's we find another, more characteristic similarity in the way these systems work. In both kinds of systems, problems are essentially solved by use of classification type reasoning. We present a fussy set based scheme that provides and effective and efficient implementation of classificatory problem solving of the two-kind examplified by IRS's and CES's.
