Further Information

Volcanic ash soils of the Great Rift Valley of Africa and east Java, Indonesia, are highly fertile due to an ample supply of available phosphorus. The origin of the natural phosphates has been determined from oxygen isotope analyses (δ18O) which reflect the formation temperature of the P-O bond. The δ18O values of phosphates extracted from fourteen surface, or near-surface, soil samples ranges from +10.1 to +24.8‰.
