Otsdawa Oct 6th 1844 My dear Son, No tounge [sic] can express nor pen describe the pleasure your welcome letter afforded us which came to hand two weeks to day and I should have answered it on last Sunday but we had no paper in the house and it snowed from the time we got up in the morning untill [sic] late at night it was quite a deep snow it did not all go off before 3 days, Twas much enjoyed to learn from your letter that you had arrived safe after so tedious a journey we all got so uneazey [uneasy] about you but particularly my self that I began to immagine [sic] almost every thing and had your letter not arrived when it did I should have written to David about you Mr B persuaded me the mail before it came to hand to wait until Sunday for began to be quite uneasy himself about you I supposed you would have written in 3 or 4 days after your arrival if you could have only known what I fealt on your account you would not have delayed writing so long I have never missed no one as much as I do you I could [say?] half of the time to think I had let you go so far from me you have always been with me from your birth except the short time you was in Connecticut I think I hear your voice every day comeing [sic] in and asking me if dinner was ready I can not realize that you are so far from me nothing would have induced me to have let you went if I had not been confident it would be for your great advantage endeavor to improve your time my dear Son and try to immitate [sic] the virtues of your beloved name Sake and Father of his Country General Washington Louisa has been reading his life through recently what a Wonderful Man he was Religion was his guide through life and I beg that you will let that be your guide. I humbly trust that you may prove a blessing to me and all your family and an ornament to Society I was much pleased to learn that you found David and all his family well you say that little George has grown so that I would not know I should be delighted to see him you did not say how Sarah was pleased with the yarn I sent her I told you to tell her the other 4 skeins that I sent I was for you and two for David for I had not time to knit any more for you and one skein sent to Harriets little girl you must give my love to her when you [damage] her and tell her I would {written up the left-hand margin of this page}: You did not say nothing about Miss Colton being with Sarah give our love to all and kiss Jorgie [sic-Georgie] for me and tell him I love to see him write soon and tell David he must write Otsdawa NY October 6 1844 (AL a) AMDB-LWB Page 2 of 4 Not for publication, reproduction, sale, or release to other persons or institutions without the express written permission of the archive which holds the original document and of the David Davis Mansion Foundation. see her and now you have got to Illinois probably some day we may visit the Western Country If you should ever like to get settled on a Farm I received a long letter from your Uncle William since you left wherein he states he has had an attack of the bilious fever likewise his wife has had an attack and her little girl has been quite ill so much that Margaret and the child had to go to Newark and calculated to remain there two weeks when he wrote and after that she was going to Baltimore for he had rented out all his Farm except the Lot round his house the Tenant was going to live in ___ house he said he was getting off his Corn at this time and calculated to send the money to the Miss Betts by the last of September or the first of Oct it was shortly after you that I received his letter I wrote him the same day but have not heard from him since but I calculate to write him to day again I am really sorry that there [sic] health is so miserable I humbly trust that his child will be spared him I shall urge him to come on here next summer as he has rented out his Farm he wrote in his letter if I would let him know when you started for Illinois in Fall he would endeavor to let you have 20 dolls but I fear he would not have done it for he is very much cramped for money but you have no Idea how [our] Journey last Fall has involved us for Mr Orsburn sent in his account yesterday and to my great surprise his Bill was 25 dollars your Father got nearly all the things last winter and the orders he gave to different persons if his Bill so far exceeded what I thought it was I had no Idea we owed him over ten dollars what do you think fields must be Frisby where you got your cloathes [sic] and Ostens Follett and Fords we owe Jarvis and Perry upwards of 30 Dolls we have sold 3 of the Cows the highest we could get was 15 dolls a piece the 2 first we sold was soon after you left we paid Smith back 20 Dolls [Linus?] Hathaway 10 and we shall have to pay Orsburn 10 dolls for we sold the Red heiffer [sic] last week we have just had to pay a hired woman 5 Dolls she left on Friday of last week and I am going to try to do without we have still the big Cow on hand but they Otsdawa NY October 6 1844 (AL a) AMDB-LWB Page 3 of 4 Not for publication, reproduction, sale, or release to other persons or institutions without the express written permission of the archive which holds the original document and of the David Davis Mansion Foundation. will not offer as much for her as they do for the others they say she is not fat we are fatning [sic] the kicking Cow and ___ we shall have old kick for ourselves we shall ___ to get them winter boots made and get them to take beef and pay stewards for [dressings?] cloth &c and getting their winter clothes made it is that which has took considerable every Fall instead of paying other things I shall not have as much butter this Fall as I had last year by nearly 200 lb we are milking but 10 Cows now and you know part of them are heiffers we shall sell days Cow and big Cows Heiffer next Spring with the 2 heiffer that will leave us is to milk next year we have bought 18 Sheep, I am sorry to tell you that we did not have over 100 Bushels of Potatoes they rotted turned out so bad you know it cost us double what I did any other Summer for several years for we not only had to hire the hay all cut after you left but all the Wheat and all the Oats Franklin dug nearly all the Potatoes they have got in the Corn and Pumpkins we had 4 loads of them we shall have to grind at least 100 Bushels of oats to [damaged]our Pork Tomorrow Mr Thare [Thayer?] is coming to get our [Corn] Wheat out I am in hopes the Wheat will Turn out well for me Corn is pretty [slim?] not more than half of it got hard. Mr B and A have just returned home from the school house from hearing Mr Cadee Preach Mr B says he is going to make a great Preacher. There is no thing talked off [sic] in Country but Politics and Mass Meetings The Whigs had a great mass meeting at Lawrence Mr F and Louisa and myself all went to Mr Fields we arrived there about half 9 in the morning we had a fine view of all the processions as they came in the Town it was a beautiful sight and about 2 October we went to town we went to tour the speaking We heard a Mr W___ from N City and Judge Spencer of Utica all together we were highly delighted. there is to be a great Whig meeting at U and Mr B and F will attend the Whigs are doing every thing in this State they have far Better speakers than they have on the other side I trust. We received a letter from Rod shortly after you left and he stated that he got a place the day he arrived at New York he gets 9 dollars a month his Board and washing and he wrote he liked his place very much about 3 weeks ago we received a letter from Amanda and she stated that she had seen Rod the day before and he said he had been sick and that we might expect him home the next week but he has not arrived as yet and I hope he will have his health and keep his place for we have been at so much expence [sic] for ___ in the Summer and then to have him come home in the winter would be a great draw back upon us I have attended the sewing society at Mrs Stone, since you left and at Mrs Popes but there was no one came but what went with us Josephine Hathaway and [Lorenza?] since then they have had it at Mrs [Landers?] and at Mr Ostens and Wednesday of this week they are going to have it at Mr ___ again where we shall attend Mrs Pope her Mother and [Pat] spent the afternoon with us last week Thursday.
