This fourth-grade engineering-Problem Based (e-PBL) unit reinforces children's understanding of natural disasters, human impacts on the environment, and provides an opportunity for children to refine their engineering design and coding skills. The unit can easily be modified for higher or lower elementary grade levels. During this unit, children work to solve a real-world problem: How can we save more lives in the event of a structural collapse? This unit reinforces NGSS 3-5-ETS1-1, 2, 3 and 4ESS3-2. After learning about structural collapse types and causes, and search and rescue operations, children work in teams to design a way to model how to search for and locate individuals trapped in a collapsed structure. Key instructional strategies include: engineering design, differentiated instruction, using experts as resources, and hands-on and real-world extensions and applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
