Library IT must deliver convenience while protecting patrons' right to know and privacy. This article first maps key security and privacy concerns and clarifies who "usable" is for. I then focus on general patrons and propose design principles and concrete countermeasures. For each patron-facing touchpoint (OPAC/discovery, self‑checkout/return, public PCs and kiosks, printing and notifications, guest wireless LAN, and makerspaces), I outline implementation patterns that work with zero prior knowledge. I also describe evaluation metrics, operational practices, and procurement checkpoints, aiming to make safety visible and effortless for diverse users across ages, abilities, and language backgrounds.
