This article reports on Web services that are increasing used for deploying Web-based application portals such as eBay and Amazon.com. They are usually built using middleware, composable building blocs such as HTTP containers, Java-based application beans, and persistent state management. As Web services offer newer and more sophisticated functionality, the process of realizing those services in the middleware is further complicated. Current Web services can be made up of dozens or hundreds of request types and middleware components.
